PUTRAJAYA, 7 Dis (Bernama) -- "Jangan kecewakan saya dan negara kita,” kata Perdana Menteri Tun Dr Mahathir yang akan menyaksikan perlawanan akhir Piala AFF Suzuki 2018 di Stadium Bukit Jalil melibatkan  Malaysia menentang Vietnam pada 11 Dis ini.

Dalam pertemuan untuk menyuntik semangat skuad Harimau Malaya di Perdana Putra di sini hari ini, Dr Mahathir berkata melalui kemenangan, kebolehan negara dapat dibanggakan.

“Kita nak cari kemenangan kerana kita nak berbangga dengan kebolehan negara kita. Sebagai rakyat Malaysia, kita bertanggungjawab mempertahankan maruah dan kehormatan negara,” katanya yang berharap skuad Harimau Malaya akan lakukan yang terbaik untuk mendapat kemenangan.

Pada pertemuan yang dihadiri Presiden Persatuan Bola Sepak Malaysia (FAM) Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, ketua jurulatih skuad Harimau Malaya Tan Cheng Hoe, dan kapten Zaquan Adha Abd Razak, Hamidin juga menyampaikan jersi No 7 kepada Dr Mahathir.

Malaysia akan bertemu pasukan Vietnam pada perlawanan akhir Piala AFF Suzuki 2018 yang akan menggunakan format timbal balik dengan skuad negara bakal melayan kunjungan Vietnam pada 11 Dis sebelum aksi final kedua di Hanoi pada 15 Dis.

Dr Mahathir dalam pertemuan itu turut berpesan agar para pemain berdisiplin khususnya menjaga masa rehat dan berlatih bersungguh-sungguh dan semangat untuk mendapat kemenangan.

“I hope you will work hard and practice a lot. Live, sleep and think only of football and winning for Malaysia (Saya harap anda bekerja keras dan banyakkan berlatih. Hidup, tidur dan fikir hanya bola dan menang untuk Malaysia),” katanya.

Dr Mahathir turut menyatakan hasratnya untuk melihat pasukan Malaysia melayakkan diri dalam World Cup nanti.

“Bola sepak adalah satu sukan yang dahulunya Malaysia kuat dan kerap menang. Sekarang, kita ketinggalan," katanya.

Beliau berkata negara Jepun telah mencapai kejayaan yang cukup pantas dan amat baik sedangkan dahulu mereka berada di belakang Malaysia dalam sukan bola sepak.

“Disebabkan mereka berlatih bersungguh-sungguh, Jepun telah maju dalam bola sepak sehingga dapat beraksi dalam World Cup. Jadi. Saya nak lihat pasukan Malaysia akan beraksi dalam World Cup satu hari nanti,” katanya.
